Magical Thinking: Young Adults’ Attitudes and Beliefs About Sex, Contraception, and Unplanned Pregnancy

Magical Thinking

At present, fully half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned. Among 20-somethings the rate is even higher—more than seven in ten pregnancies to single women in their twenties are unplanned. Moreover, at a time when the teen pregnancy rate has declined dramatically (down 36% between 1990 and 2004, the most recent data available), there has been no comparable progress among young adults. Given the high rate of unplanned pregnancy among young adults, The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and Self magazine are pleased to present the results of a public opinion survey of young adults (ages 18-29) on relationships, sex, fertility, contraception, and unplanned pregnancy.
